Peels on Wheels

As yet, we don’t all live in areas with food waste collections and if you don’t have a garden, then having your own compost bin is out of the question. But throwing away those food scraps can leave you feeling like you should be doing something more.

If only we all had the Rot Riders to rescue us.

The Rot Riders are a group of volunteers and students from Truman State University who cycle around Kirksville, Missouri, collecting food waste from homes to compost. Residents that are keen to be involved in the scheme can get in touch and the gang will add them to their round, throwing their scraps into the trailer behind their bikes.

The service is completely free and what’s more, the resulting compost is available to local gardeners at no cost. So it’s win win for the compost bin.

The Rot Riders might only be in America right now but that doesn’t mean we can’t follow their lead over here. Setting up a community compost scheme couldn’t be simpler. All you need is a bike, a trailer, some land and maybe a friend or two to muck in and help cart round the compost.  Easy peasy.
