We're proud to announce we've won the Retail Leadership award at the 2009 Greener Package Awards for our industry-leading approach to reducing packaging and addressing sustainability.

Adam Pawlick, Manager of Sustainability, ConAgra, chaired the Awards. "The judges were impressed by the comprehensive strategy that M&S has towards the environment,” he says. “Their efforts were…considered world class and set the standard for others to follow."

Our own Dr Helene Roberts, M&S Head of Food Packaging, commented, “We’re delighted that our responsible approach to packaging has been recognised by industry experts. At M&S we believe that addressing packaging is all about looking at the total picture - not just reducing packaging but using the right materials from sustainable sources and helping our customers to learn about how they can dispose of our packaging so that it can be used again.”

Between April 2007 and May 2008, we managed to save 12% , or 1402 tonnes, of packaging. In some cases we also managed to make a change for the better by adding recycled content to our packaging, whilst still maintaining 90% recyclability. Since October 2007, we’ve increased the amount of widely recyclable food packaging from 68% to 74%. And a further 17% of our food packaging is recyclable where the local facilities are available.

Packaging has been one, and still is, one of our key Plan A challenges, so we’re delighted that our efforts have been recognised by this award.
