Plan A is all about doing the right thing. A big part of that is looking at the packaging we use, and improving it wherever we can.
Through Plan A we’ve set ourselves four packaging goals:
• To reduce our non-glass product packaging by 25% by 2012
• To use only recyclable or compostable packaging by 2012
• To use more sustainable raw materials in our packaging
• To put clear and honest labelling on our packaging, telling you about its recyclability
So, how are we measuring up to these goals so far?
Since 2007, we’ve reduced our food packaging by 12% (on average per food item) - almost halfway to our target of a 25% reduction by 2012. That 12% equates to over 4000 tonnes.
Over 90% of our packaging is now recyclable, a figure that’s verified by WRAP.
We're doing the right thing with our packaging
One of our key priorities is to use as much recycled content as possible. We were the first retailer to launch recycled content in our plastic, back in 2002, and now over 70% of our clear rigid plastics contain recycled content. Our strawberry packs, for example, contain 50%, while our washing up liquid bottle has 30%. Using recycled content can make plastic packaging weigh more, but in fact it makes the packaging more environmentally sustainable.
We were also the first retailer to label the majority of our food packaging with recycling information, making it easier for you to recycle. By focusing on the use of three types of plastic, we make it easier for local authorities to collect, too.
We’ve worked hard to make these reductions and changes, but we know there’s still more work to do to achieve our 2012 targets. Look out for further progress updates on the site.
