Along with our suppliers, we've been working hard again this year to reduce our Easter packaging. By making small changes to packaging design we've been able to achieve a big saving of 9% in weight across the Easter range, whilst still ensuring great looking gifts.
We've worked hard to tackle packaging reduction across our whole Easter range - not just boxed eggs, but more challenging areas like sweets and chocolate wrapped in plastic. With “Max the Bunny” for example, a packaging weight reduction of over 90% has been achieved simply by removing his plastic drum and replacing it with a light weight printed plastic film – and he still looks just as delicious as before!
"We've made it easy for our customers to buy beautifully designed gifts, just with less packaging" - Helene Roberts, Marks & Spencer's Head of Packaging
As part of Plan A, M&S is committed to a total reduction of 25% on all non-glass food packaging by 2012, as well as using sustainable materials where possible.
- Over 70% of our Easter packaging is from sustainable sources, for example:
- 83% of all cardboard used is from FSC accredited forests
- 68% of all plastic used in the range contains 50% post-consumer recycled materials, in place of virgin oil-based plastic
- Over 85% of packaging across the range is recyclable
We know we still have lots to do, but this is another step in the right direction towards achieving our goal.
Hopefully we've lightened the Easter Bunny's load for another year!
