We have put together 6 useful tips that will help you get the most out of the food you buy.
Nobody wants to throw things out. Storing food properly would reduce some of the 6.7 million tonnes we throw out every year. There are a few quick wins here we could all do better:
Use the freezer
Whilst you are shopping it's a good idea to check which food items can be frozen. Packets of fish and meat are best divided up and frozen as individual portions. Always remember to look at the packaging to check the freezing instructions.
Freezers are great for storing 'buy one get one free' offers. Anything you batch cook can easily be stored there too for another day. So make sure you have some freezer bags handy.
Use the fridge
A fridge needs to be set at a cool 1 to 5 degrees centigrade for food to last as long as possible. Investing in a fridge thermometer can help.
Plastic containers with a lid are an excellent way of keeping food fresher for longer, particularly when it has been taken out of its original packaging. Keeping fruit and veg in the fridge in their packaging can help them to last longer. Always remember to keep an eye on the date labels of food in the fridge to know what needs to be used first.
