We have put together 6 useful tips that will help you get the most out of the food you buy.
By using leftovers we can help reduce the £1 billion worth of home made meals being thrown away each year.
Some of our best meals are thrown together from the leftovers in the fridge. Using things up in this way is a crafty way of saving time and money, as well as food.
Sunday roasts are one of the best chances to do this. One chicken goes a long way. It can easily be used the next day in risottos, curries or sandwiches. Cold vegetables too are delicious in bubble and squeak for breakfast or supper. Or you can always blend them up for the baby.
The key is storing leftovers properly. Bag them up and put them in the freezer if you don’t think you'll use them right away. Or if you put them in the fridge they will keep for the next day. Make sure that leftovers are always heated until piping hot before they're eaten. Leftover wine and beer can be frozen in ice cube trays and dropped into stocks or soups.
There are lots of creative things you can do with leftover bread, like making breadcrumbs for crumbles and puddings.
You can also cut the bruises out of apples, and mash up black bananas with cream for a super quick and tasty dessert.
