Paper Sourcing

FSC, M&S & forestry management

M&S forestry programme.

The majority of our wood fibre is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), which means it’s been sourced in an environmentally responsible way – and we’re very proud of that. However, the production of paper and wooden items does have some other impacts that aren’t included within the FSC standard, so we’ve introduced our own forestry programme as a way of promoting the benefits of sustainable forest management to producers across the industry.

We know that some of our customers worry about the impact wood fibre production can have on the environment. You can see from our photographs from the forest that supplies us with timber, how well managed forests also create beautiful natural environments in which living species can flourish.

We've consulted with forestry, sustainability and industry experts to develop this programme, in particular Rainforest Alliance, one of the leading not-for-profit organisations dedicated to protecting forests. Through this collaboration we’ve been able to develop a set of social and environmental indicators that means we can identify those achieving the highest standards. We look at how well companies work with their local communities, what other environmental programmes they support and how they manage their carbon footprint – are they investing in innovative technology to meet emerging environmental challenges? When companies meet these standards, then they get our business.

It's all part of our commitment to protect our precious natural resources, not just for ourselves and our customers now, but for generations to come.
