Topping the tuna league

Topping the tuna league

In January 2011, Greenpeace published their tinned tuna league table and we're delighted to announce that your M&S is joint number one.

Endangered sharks and other species are killed every year while catching tuna. That's why we switched all our tinned tuna to pole and line, a responsible method of fishing that minimises the catch of other species, back in 2009.

At the same time, we also went a step further by switching all the tuna we use in our ready meals, salads and sandwiches to pole and line caught - and we were the first major UK retailer to do this.

Paul Willgoss, our Head of Food Technology said: "We’re delighted to see that Greenpeace have recognised all the work we’ve done to ensure we have fish from the most sustainable sources available to us for our customers to enjoy. We know that responsible fish sourcing is really important to our customers and we want to make it as easy as possible for them to buy food they can trust. This award helps to reaffirm our industry leading position in addressing fish sustainability. Whether it be in a sandwich, pasta bake or a can, our tuna is pole and line caught and we’ll continue to work closely with our suppliers and NGOs to ensure our food has been made in the most compassionate way for the environment."
