You may have seen reports lately about cattle farming in Brazil damaging the Amazonian rainforest, so we thought it was important to let you know what our policy is on sourcing beef from Brazil.
As you’d expect, we have a history of working with our suppliers to make sure that the highest standards of welfare and environmental care operate wherever we source. Our fresh beef all comes from British and Irish farms that we know and trust – you can find out more about the great work our farmers are doing in our Meet the Farmer section, here.
The beef we use for our prepared grocery ranges comes from Epitacio, Brazil. Thanks to our longstanding relationship with our supplier there, we’ve been able to put in place clear traceability systems, which we continue to develop; these mean that we can assure you none of our beef comes from the Amazon biome. For extra confidence, we regularly audit the systems using an independent third party.
Part of our Plan A commitments involve trying to make things better across the whole retail industry, rather than just thinking about M&S, so we’re encouraging our supplier to take part in wider industry talks to improve traceability systems for all beef buyers. After all, like you, we want the Amazon and all its natural wonders to be protected for future generations.
