Our groundbreaking tuna policy

Our groundbreaking tuna policy

You may have read in the papers that M&S has achieved an industry first with our groundbreaking tuna policy. But what does it mean and what are the benefits?

As of the end of June 2009, all our tuna will be pole & line or line-caught with no use of fishing nets. This is the most sustainable way of fishing and the best way of ensuring other species are not caught, such as turtles and sharks.

The new policy applies to all tuna in our sandwiches, meals, fishcakes and other products. All our fresh tuna is Yellowfin and our canned tuna is Skipjack, which is also used in sandwiches and other products. We do not and never have sold the endangered Bluefin tuna.

M&S is Britain’s top retailer when it comes to sustainable fishing. Both the Marine Conservation Society and Greenpeace named M&S as the leading UK retailer for responsible fish sourcing in their sustainable fishing awards.

Willie Mackenzie, Oceans Campaigner, Greenpeace UK, commented, “This is yet more evidence of M&S being market leaders in the responsible sourcing of fish, and other brands are left playing catch-up. M&S are making it easier than ever to eat tuna with a clear conscience.”
