We're delighted to have been named Compassionate Supermarket 2008 by leading farm animal welfare charity Compassion in World Farming. The award was in recognition of the high standards of animal welfare Marks & Spencer maintained in producing Oakham™ chickens, free-range whole fresh turkeys, ducks and geese, and more.
We’re always doing our best to ensure our customers can purchase products both high in quality and in welfare values. For ten years now, M&S has sold only free range eggs. More recently, we stopped selling white veal and have committed to selling only rosé veal.
Steven Esom, Executive Director, Food, said: “High animal welfare is at the heart of our business so it’s fantastic news that our efforts have been recognised by Compassion in World Farming."
Compassion in World Farming conduct this survey every two years. It looks at the animal welfare policies of major UK food retailers such as Sainsbury’s, Tesco, M&S, Waitrose, Morrisons, Co-op and Somerfield, measuring their policies and performance on key farm animal welfare issues. The survey looks at the rearing and management of a range of animals, from beef and dairy cattle to poultry, pigs and fish.
So whether you fancy pork or chicken for this Sunday’s roast dinner, you can rest assured they will have been reared to our M&S welfare standards.
