Bringing home the bacon

Bringing home the bacon

There's some concern at the moment about how pigs in this country, and further afield, are farmed.

So we thought you'd like to know that at M&S, all our fresh pork is outdoor bred, in Britain on known specially selected farms. The pigs are reared to our leading animal welfare standards.

It's not just our fresh pork that we can trace. All our pork, whether it's in sausages, sandwiches or on your pizza, is clearly labelled to tell you the country of origin. And we can guarantee that it's all produced to UK welfare standards, wherever it's sourced.

As part of our Plan A commitments, we're also working at the moment to convert all our fresh pork to free range. We already sell free range pork in selected stores - look out for the labels on pack - and we'll continue to work on producing more free range meat in the coming months.

M&S' standards of animal welfare have been recognised by the RSPCA (in 2008, we won the RSPCA Good Business Awards for Supermarkets, as well as a Compassion in World Farming Most Compassionate Supermarket Award).

So, next time you put pork, or something with pork in it, in your M&S basket, just take a look at the label and it'll tell you all you need to know. When it comes to the traceability and welfare of our pigs, we're bringing home the bacon.
