Forever fish will help fund three of WWF’s marine conservation priorities:

Clownfish

Coastal East Africa and the Coral Triangle are home to some of the most diverse marine life in the world. But both seascapes are threatened by overfishing, climate change and unsustainable tourism development. M&S will be supporting WWF's work with governments and local communities to establish marine protected areas which will help to protect magnificent species like dolphins, turtles and coral reef.

UK seas are some of the busiest in the world. The new funding from M&S will help boost WWF's work with government and industry to ensure our oceans are managed better - so that fish stocks have a chance to recover and threatened species such as dolphins and harbour porpoises have a safe haven.

Stocks of some of the most commercially valuable tuna species are at dangerous low levels. Additional funding will help WWF highlight and address some of the biggest challenges facing tuna, such as illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing, so that we can secure a future for this popular and highly valued fish.

WWF Seafood Charter

M&S was the first UK retailer to sign up to WWF’s Seafood Charter – a joint commitment to safeguard marine wildlife, the natural environment and the livelihoods of people who depend on the oceans for their well-being. Over 90% of the fish M&S sells comes from the most sustainable sources available, such as those certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). Where MSC certified sources are not available, M&S is working with WWF to ensure that all its other fisheries have sustainable practices in place too. Sustainable fishing is a complicated issue and one on which many people's livelihoods depend. Estimates show that around one-quarter of the UK's sea bed has been damaged by activities such as trawling and other industrial activities, at the same time as vulnerable marine habitats and species are struggling to adapt to the pressures of climate change. With over 250 million people earning their living from fishing - and up to one billion relying on fish as their primary source of protein - this is a problem that cannot be ignored.

By signing the WWF Seafood Charter, M&S is tackling sustainable sourcing of all its seafood products. WWF is helping us evaluate the sustainability of our fish products and give guidance on identifying and developing more sustainable sources. We are working together to raise awareness of sustainability issues relating to seafood products, helping customers make more informed choices.

Joining forces with the Marine Conservation Society

Cleaning up the beach

M&S has worked with the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) since 2005. MCS is the leading UK charity dedicated to the protection of our seas, shores and wildlife. They campaign for clean seas and beaches, sustainable fisheries, protection of marine life and their habitats, and the sensitive use of our marine resources for future generations.

M&S and MCS will be working together over the next three years to:

  • Reduce litter on UK beaches with the help of M&S customers and employees in MCS Beachwatch litter surveys and clean ups;
  • Support sustainable seafood, MCS produces the Good Fish Guide on the fish to eat and fish to avoid
