Big Beach Clean-up

From 11th-13th May 2012, we’ll be working with the Marine Conservation Society to carry out around 50 beach cleans across the UK – why not come along and help?

Why is beach cleaning so important?

Some of our best-loved marine wildlife is under threat from the waste and litter in our seas. Hundreds of species accidentally eat or become tangled up in litter. Turtles mistake plastic bags for jellyfish and the bags can block their stomachs often leading them to starve.

On top of causing harm to wildlife, litter on our beaches is hazardous to people. There's nothing better than a stroll along the beach - the sand between your toes, the pebbles moving on the tide - but sadly these days a walk along many UK beaches could see you coming into contact with litter. Common finds are bits of plastic, fishing nets and ropes, bottle tops, bottles and fast food wrappers.

M&S is working with the Marine Conservation Society to raise awareness of the problems of beach litter and improve them for everyone to enjoy. On the beach clean-up weekend we'll be recording the litter found, as well as cleaning it up, and the findings will form part of a Marine Conservation Society report measuring the amount and types of litter found and the different sources, and help in campaigning for cleaner beaches and seas for the future.

So why not come and enjoy a day out in the sunshine, cleaning up a beach near you?

In addition, to say thank you for taking part, we'll give you £5 off your next food shop of £25 or more*.

While you're there, why not Tweet your beach clean photograph to enter our prize draw? Upload a picture taken at a participating beach on the day, which can be an image of the beach, sea life or any unusual items you might find! Tweet it at @marksandspencer #beachclean for the chance to win a £50 M&S Gift Card.
