Hydrogenated fats have been linked to a whole range of serious health issues, such as heart disease. As part of our effort to offer you healthier options M&S has not used hydrogenated fats since 2006.
Back in 2005, we set the goal of removing all hydrogenated fats from our food and, from 31 March 2006, we achieved that. In doing so, we became the first major high street retailer not to use hydrogenated fats at all.
Removing hydrogenated fats, man-made trans fats that are more harmful weight for weight than saturated fats, was a part of our major additive reduction programme.
Our overall aim is to continue to reduce all unnecessary additives in our food. In October 2005, for example, we removed all artificial flavourings, artificial colours and hydrogenated fats from all our chilled ready meals. We have been working over the last 3 years to remove artificial colours and flavourings from all our food. This work has involved reformulating over 900 products and, as of 1st April 2008, all the food and soft drink manufactured for us no longer contains artificial colours or flavourings. There will be some longer life products containing artificial colour and flavourings in store that we will sell through by the end of the 2008.
Over the years we’ve achieved a number of other food industry firsts, including the removal of MSG 10 years ago and banning the use of Tartrazine 20 years ago.
What it boils down to is our belief in real food rather than food cooked up in a laboratory. Enjoy.
