Labelling

Aim
Aim Introducing the use of nutritional ‘traffic lights’ to relevant food products.

Progress Summary
The Food Standards Agency’s nutritional traffic light labels, first introduced on our food products in 2007, are now on all of our FSA recommended categories of food, including ready meals and sandwiches. We’ve also maintained improvements in the nutritional profile of our food. Since we introduced these labels, over 50% of our FSA labelled products have no reds for saturated fats and the number of products carrying red labels has fallen by 30%.

Natural colours

Aim
Using only natural colours in our children’s sweets and cakes by the start of 2008.

Progress Summary
We removed artificial colours and flavouring from all our food and soft drinks (not just children’s sweets) production as of 1 April 2008.

Salt

Aim
Making further reductions to the amount of salt in our foods by working to M&S targets many of which go beyond those set by the Food Standards Agency.

Progress Summary
We meet FSA salt reduction targets on 67% of the food categories we sell including all 15 of those which are recognised as contributing high levels of salt to the diet and are priority areas for M&S. In 2010 we plan to continue our efforts to reduce salt and work with the FSA to develop practical targets.

Healthy Eating Advisers

Aim
Introducing 1,500 Healthy Eating Advisers in our stores and extend this training to our food section employees by the start of 2010.

Progress Summary
Having introduced 1,500 Healthy Eating Assistants we planned to extend this knowledge to our whole food team. In April 2009 we trained management from each store who will then train their teams.
