Four elephants fewer for Easter!

Four elephants fewer for Easter!

This year, we reduced the weight of our Easter packaging by over 20 tonnes. That's a reduction of nearly 20% from the previous year, and the equivalent of four adult elephants!

We worked hard to tackle packaging reduction across our whole Easter range - not just boxed eggs, but more challenging areas like sweets and chocolate wrapped in plastic. Our Organic Easter egg, for example, had a 75% reduction in packaging weight without having to make any compromise on the way it looks, or its quality.

As well as reducing the physical size and thickness of our packaging, we actually eliminated some elements altogether. For example, with the Organic Easter egg (pictured) we removed the plastic window and replaced it with a cut-out cardboard design making it easier to recycle, too.

As part of Plan A, M&S is committed to a total reduction of 25% on all non-glass food packaging by 2012, as well as using sustainable raw materials where possible. This is why for example, over 90% of our Easter eggs and chocolates were packaged using cardboard from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) accredited forests. Over 70% of the plastic we used in our Easter packaging had a minimum of 50% recycled content. We know we still have lots to do, but this is a step in the right direction towards achieving our goal.

Hopefully that lightened the load for the Easter bunny!
