Prostate Cancer Awareness

Prostate Cancer Awareness

For many years prostate cancer was a taboo subject. A lack of information about the disease kept it out of the public eye until 1996, when a consultant urologist set up The Prostate Cancer Charity to support men who were diagnosed and channel energy into the causes of the disease.

Confusion about where the prostate gland is (tucked under the bladder), and what it does (it’s part of the male reproductive organs) combined with embarrassment over the symptoms and treatment of the disease, kept many men quiet for years.

Finally, thanks to the efforts of The Prostate Cancer Charity, prostate cancer is getting the attention it deserves. From the press, science funding and some policy makers - but there's still a long way to go before awareness about this cancer can actually make a difference to the number of deaths every year.

Every year, as part of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, M&S distributes over a million leaflets letting people know about prostate cancer, as well as raising money through sales of blue man pin badges and other items.

Prostate Cancer Awareness Month - March 2010

Since 2007 M&S has worked with The Prostrate Cancer Charity to raise awareness and funding. The partnership has raised almost £800,000 to date.

In 2010 we donated 10% of Autograph Underwear sales during the first three weeks of the campaign, raising over £46,000. Employees made a huge effort and raised over £30,000.

Tour of Britain - September

Cycling fans took part in the The Prostate Cancer Charity Tour Rides across the UK. There were varying distances in three different locations; Stoke-on-Trent, London and the South West. In a brand new event for 2010, cyclists were able to take on the personal challenge of a 175km professional ride from Minehead to Teignmouth, or cover part of the route in distances of 2km or 70km.

M&S were the 'Official Sandwich Supplier' this year to The Prostate Cancer Charity Tour Rides.

Movember

Movember - the month better known as November, is the annual moustache growing event which raises awareness and funds for The Prostate Cancer Charity. Last year the M&S menswear team all put down their razors in aid of Movember and raised just over £6,000.
